My Dear Murcia.

Written by VICTORIA MANZANARES RUIZ.

My name is Vicky and I am going to write about the city where I live, which is MURCIA.

It is located in the south east of SPAIN. It is not a big city, there are 442.203 inhabitants.

The climate is mild, with hot summers, tepid winters and scarce precipitation. Murcia is called Europe’s orchard due to its long agricultural tradition and as a fruits, vegetables and flowers producer and exporter.

In my city there are a lot of beautiful places. One of them is the Cathedral, located in the old town of the city. Near the cathedral we find the City Hall, in the Glorieta square. The main streets are Traperia, Plateria and Gran Via, where there are a lot of shops and cafes. Other important places are Santo Domingo Square and Flowers Square.

In Murcia there is a river called Segura, which crosses the city from west to east. Unfortunately, it is considered as one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. Several bridges of different styles span the river Segura, such as Puente de los Peligros and Puente Nuevo.

Tourism is very important in Murcia, especially in summer, when a lot of foreigners come to enjoy in our beautiful beaches. The main ones are Mazarrón and La Manga. Foreign people not only love our weather, but also our food. The most traditional dishes are “Zarangollo”, Murcian salad, “Paparajotes” and meat pie.

In addition, Murcia is an attraction to foreign people because of their festivals. In the city some festivals are celebrated. For example, the Holy Week procession is among the most famous in Spain. The most colorful festival in Murcia comes one week after Holy Week, when people dress up in traditional “huertano” clothing to celebrate the Bando de la Huerta (Orchard parade) on Tuesday and fill the streets for the Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine) parade the following Saturday.
